| Leaky Transaxle Oil Seals
If you notice that your transaxle is leaking oil at the axle seals & it has become severe enough that you need to replace the seals, you should first determine that it is no more than a worn out seal.
Not always but some times what looks like an oil leak due to a worn out seal, may actually be a little more involved. When replacing the oil seal, you should also closely inspect the shaft for any signs of damage around the seal area. And you should always use a Mic & measure the shaft diameter & check it against the tractors specs for size & wear limits. In addition you should also pay close attention to any shaft bearings as well.
People have asked me what is causing the leak after they've installed a new seal. My question back to them is always the same. Did you inspect the shaft itself as described above, as well as inspection any shaft bearings. If the shaft is worn beyond allowable tolerances and/or if the bearings are worn or damaged, the needed repair will take you beyond simply replacing the seals to resolve the problem. You may have to replace the shaft & bearings as well. I know that's news you don't want to hear. But just think of how nice it will be to not have to clean up the oil mess on your garage floor & the added inconvenience of topping off the gear oil, which generally takes up a lot more time & effort then you care to put into it.
Happy Lawn Motoring!
