On Thursday March 25,2010 at about five A.M. it started to snow here in the lower Hudson Valley of NY. This event would last over the next two days leaving tens of thousands of residents in the region buried under anywhere from a scant six inches of snow to over 30 inches in most places, not to mention the drifts of several feet high.
At my place we lost the power for about thirty hours straight making life difficult. In the house I watched the temperature on the thermostat steadily drop down. It wasn't long before the wife complained as I silently asked myself how low would the house temperature go. I told my wife it's not that bad. Just think of all the people stranded out here on the highway sitting in their cars & no one can help them. By friday afternoon, when there was a break in the snowfall & a chance to get out & plow the driveway, we had something like two feet on the driveway.
Finally a break & a chance to measure the snow at twenty four inches deep on the driveway. Would this prove too much for my JD 855 to handle?
Freedom! It took me two hours to push my way through twenty four inches of wet hard packed snow. The driveway is three hundred & twenty five feet long & 12 feet wide. This storm had plenty of moisture to make it super heavy. As soon as you moved it, you could see the pale blue glow in the snow. The blue color is caused by the reflection of the water on the snow flakes. You can't see it here in the photos, but I know if you were out here moving snow around you would see it too.
